Hillary's Truth Problem

It appears that Hillary Clinton has a problem telling the truth.  The latest example is that of the Bosnia affair, but she's got a history of lies.  Dick Morris goes into more detail at RealClearPolitics.com:

The USA Today/Gallup survey clearly explains why Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) is losing. Asked whether the candidates were "honest and trustworthy," Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won with 67 percent, with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) right behind him at 63. Hillary scored only 44 percent, the lowest rating for any candidate for any attribute in the poll.

Hillary simply cannot tell the truth. Here's her scorecard:

Admitted Lies

• Chelsea was jogging around the Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. (She was in bed watching it on TV.)
• Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. (She admitted she was wrong. He climbed Mt. Everest five years after her birth.)
• She was under sniper fire in Bosnia. (A girl presented her with flowers at the foot of the ramp.)
• She learned in The Wall Street Journal how to make a killing in the futures market. (It didn't cover the market back then.)

Whoppers She Won't Confess To

• She didn't know about the FALN pardons.
• She didn't know that her brothers were being paid to get pardons that Clinton granted.
• Taking the White House gifts was a clerical error.
• She didn't know that her staff would fire the travel office staff after she told them to do so.
• She didn't know that the Peter Paul fundraiser in Hollywood in 2000 cost $700,000 more than she reported it had.
• She opposed NAFTA at the time.
• She was instrumental in the Irish peace process.
• She urged Bill to intervene in Rwanda.
• She played a role in the '90s economic recovery.
• The billing records showed up on their own.
• She thought Bill was innocent when the Monica scandal broke.
• She was always a Yankees fan.
• She had nothing to do with the New Square Hasidic pardons (after they voted for her 1,400-12 and she attended a meeting at the White House about the pardons).
• She negotiated for the release of refugees in Macedonia (who were released the day before she got there).

With a record like that, is it any wonder that we suspect her of being less than honest and straightforward?

Not really, no.  In fact, I think that the common understanding of the Clintons is that they're happy to lie about anything if they think they can get away with it.  What gets downright entertaining is the fact that we now live in a much more scrutinizing 24-7 media environment
(including the New Media), and they don't get away with nearly as much in 2008 as they did in 1992.

As many men can tell you, the first rule of holes is: when you're in one, stop digging.  Hillary doesn't get that.

Hillary has now lied about the lie several times, changing her story on why she said it.  The original lie is basically that she went to Bosnia in 1996 because it was too dangerous to send the President (never mind the obvious stupidity of supposedly sending the First Lady, First Child, Cheryl Crow, and Sinbad into a place that the President wouldn't go).  She said the plane corkscrewed down, and that they had to duck and run off the runway to avoid sniper fire.  CBS happened to be along on that ride, and recently released video that completely contradicted her account, which I posted a couple days ago.  Now, Hillary has offered up the following lies/explanations:

You'd think Bill would encourage her to stop digging.  Then again, he's never been too good at it, either.  Anyway, Hot Air posts a series of video clips to hammer away at Clinton's lies.  One major problem with this oopsy being a mistake is the fact that Clinton has shared this duck-and-run version of the story several times, including in Iowa in December, Texas in February, her own book released in 2004, and all over Washington, D.C. in recent months.  The story is supposed to show how she's got that leadership experience and is ready to lead the country, but it instead reveals only her seeming inability to stick to the truth.

Michelle Malkin also highlights the Bosnia flap, and goes on to share another list of lies Clinton has said over the years:

This is the woman who insisted for more than a decade that she was named after the late, great mountain-climber Sir Edmund Hilary—never mind that she was born six years before he scaled Mount Everest in 1953.

This is the woman who told Dateline NBC that daughter Chelsea was on a jog in New York City when the jihadists struck on 9/11—never mind that Chelsea later wrote a magazine essay revealing that she watched the attacks on television from a friend's apartment.

This is the woman who claimed to have "helped start" the federal Children Health Insurance Program—never mind that the program's original sponsors noted that Sen. Clinton fought the initial bill and had no role in writing the legislation.

This is the woman (echoed by her husband and daughter) who bragged that she was the "first" to call the disaster in Darfur "genocide"—never mind that several other senators had done so in 2004, while her first press statement referring to Darfur as "genocide" wasn't until March 2006.

This is the woman who claimed to have organized "instrumental" meetings in Belfast and baldly asserted that she "helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland"—never mind that key negotiators dismissed her as "totally invisible," "cheerleading," and "a wee bit silly."

And we haven't even gotten to the Whitewater era yet, which not coincidentally, is when her Tuzla imaginary bullet-dodging adventure took place—timed to distract from all of her and her husband's dishonest, dirty dealings.

Malkin sums up the Democat race beautifully: "Behold the Democrat choices for president: One candidate whose twenty-year spiritual guru has an adversarial relationship with America–and another who has a life-long adversarial relationship with the truth."

Bingo!

There's my two cents.
