Illegal Immigration 10: Enforce existing law? Heck, no!

As with the Cornyn amendment yesterday, the Senate has rejected an amendment that makes perfect sense and is clearly in our country's best interest. This one, put forward by Senator Jim DeMint (Rep, SC) and Senator Tom Coburn (Rep, OK), would have guaranteed that existing immigration laws (things like ensuring the entire fence would be built, all databases with illegal alien information would be current and operational, a system would be in place to track every alien leaving and returning, and the elimination of 'sanctuary' cities, among other things) would be enforced before any amnesty is granted.

Shockingly, a majority of the Senate thought that was a bad idea.

Here's how our Senators voted:
- Bond: in favor (good!)
- McCaskill: in favor
(good!)
- Roberts: in favor (good!)
- Brownback: against (bad!)

Some good news: an amendment put forward by Byron Dorgan (Dem, ND) that would sunset the temporary worker program after five years passed. This is good news because potential supporters of this bill may decide it's not worth taking the heat for this shamnesty bill if one of the main pieces ends so soon.

Another update: The first cloture vote failed 33-63. Reid said he'd bring it up again later today.

Keep up the pressure - the shamnesty bill is struggling, but it's far from over yet!

There's my two cents.
