Environmentalists on Monday applauded an announcement that U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama would consider curtailing oil and gas drilling in some areas, and expressed hope future energy policy decisions would contain more environmental protections. So, let's recap what we know of Obama's energy plan:
The co-chair of Obama's transition team, John Podesta, said on Sunday that Obama probably would reverse an executive order by President George W. Bush allowing drilling in fragile lands in Utah.
Mike Daulton, legislative director of the National Audubon Society, said reversing the order would be a promising step away from the Bush administration's energy policy, which he called too slanted toward the oil industry.
1. bankrupt the coal industry, which provides 50% of America's energy production
2. kill development of nuclear power, which provides 20% of America's energy production
3. now, he will also reinstate the ban on oil drilling, which provides much of the rest of America's energy production
The obvious question is: how are we supposed to keep prices low and maintain national security when we're forced to import so much of our energy resources from hostile nations? Oh, that's right...it's impossible! But that's what he wants. Remember, when gas prices were sky-high this summer, Obama was never upset about the prices being high, he was just unhappy that they shot up so fast.
This is likely to be one of the biggest problems we see with an Obama presidency: high energy prices, combined with a stranglehold over domestic energy sources. It'll kill both our economic strength and undermine our national security.
Watch out for this.
There's my two cents.
