RNC Day One

The first day of the Republican National Convention was muted by Hurricane Gustav.  In fact, very little happened outside of the minimum required business - the first night was essentially canceled so people could focus on the Gulf Coast.  The only major events were a massive outpouring of support and fundraising for the cleanup of Gustav's wrath on New Orleans and other areas.  Laura Bush and Cindy McCain spoke, but things were pretty subdued.  Fortunately, while Gustav packed quite a punch, it wasn't the disaster that Katrina was.

By all accounts, all levels of government cooperated smoothly, conducting a major evacuation and protecting things and people as much as possible.  Not only have they learned from the mistakes of three years ago, but it also helps to have a competent Governor (Bobby Jindal) in charge of things on a state level, where much of the preparation and leadership in this sort of event resides.  In fact, he was the only major player that was different - the Bush administration was largely the same, the New Orleans city administration was largely the same...only Jindal was a marked difference from Katrina.  You wouldn't know that from the news coverage, though, since the MSM refuses to give credit to a young, conservative Republican.

Quite frankly, I believe the MSM will over-saturate the Gustav aftermath and the hype to Hanna (the next hurricane blowing in) simply as a reason to ignore the RNC as much as possible.  Once again, the Left seem to be relishing the destruction of these storms:

"This hurricane is proof there is a God in Heaven."

Nice.  It's tragic how those who run the loony Left keep wishing for destruction to be wreaked upon their own people simply to score political points.  It's mind-boggling how they continue to be given power and a forum with which to spew their verbal filth by those same people living through the destruction.

Nevertheless, the RNC will resume today.  The major headlines from the first day revolve mostly around some anarchists who attacked delegates with poison and terrorized a bus load of Cub Scouts, though even the 2,000 trouble makers that showed up was far fewer than the 50,000 the organizers were hoping for.  Once again, major attacks appear to have been averted by law enforcement.

More updates on the RNC as the next complete day unfolds.  Scheduled speakers over the rest of the week include Fred Thompson, George W. Bush, Palin, and McCain.

There's my two cents.
