Pelosi's Problems

A few days ago, I suggested that all the problems that Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was experiencing wouldn't really hurt her politically. It appears I may have spoken too soon. Here's some background...

So, not only was Pelosi busted about being two-faced on waterboarding, but every other Democrat who is now against it was busted, too. But, Pelosi has some particular problems with her story. She's now come out with several different versions, and not even the media is buying her goods any more. It could not be more obvious that she is lying about what she knew and when she knew it. The last straw was probably accusing the CIA of lying to her. Not a brilliant idea.

Anyway, in a last desperate move, she held a press conference yesterday to clear the record, but she basically did nothing of the kind. In fact, she probably just dug her own hole a bit deeper. Here's the full video, but the best part starts about 5:30 in:

Not exactly an impressive display! Here's a follow up with one of the reporters who actually tightened the screws, explaining some of the fishiness:

Even more blunt is Charles Krauthammer:

Senator Joe Lieberman calls bull on the fact that the CIA is going to lie to members of Congress on the intelligence committees, and he's right. After all, if the Bush administration was doing something wrong, why would they continuously consult with members of both parties of Congress about it? It just doesn't hold water. Senator Lindsey Graham says that if there was a crime being committed, she was a part of it. The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen. Kit Bond, told FOX News that Pelosi's accusation against the CIA is "not credible."

"I am afraid she has disremembered what she went through," he said. "We have had not only the records from the CIA but the contemporaries who were there with her had other views on it, so I am afraid that this is not a credible explanation."
As she engages in this turf war with the CIA, the number two Democrat in the House, Steny Hoyer, appears strangely reluctant to support her:

Asked at a news conference whether Democrats were inviting political problems for themselves by holding hearings, Hoyer said, “I think the facts need to get out.

“I think the Republicans are simply trying to distract the American public with who knew what when. My response to that is, look, the issue is not what was said or what was known; the question and focus ought to be on what was done.”

But he added that the controversy over “what was said and when it was said, who said it … is probably what ought to be on the record as well.”

Rush Limbaugh poses the scenario that Pelosi may be on her last political legs because she and Obama have never gotten a long well. By contrast, Hoyer and Rahm Emanuel (Obama's Chief of Staff) are very tight, and he might be looking for a promotion. If this is the case, we could see Pelosi soon exit and Hoyer move up.

We shall see. Regardless, it's nice to see her squirm, and it's nice to see the media actually do their jobs for a change. Pelosi has been revealed as the opportunistic politically partisan hack that she is, and her leadership role may be coming to a close because of it.

I suppose it's too much to ask for someone to question Obama to even a tenth of this degree on any number of issues...

There's my two cents.
