May Day Wrap-Up: I'm Good!

Last week I made some predictions about the illegal immigration marches that took place on May Day, and I wanted to examine how those predictions came out. Here is my previous post, in case you missed it.

In short, my predictions were:
1. There will be a lot of media hubbub, but it will be exaggerated.
2. There will be many more Mexican flags than American flags.
3. There will be no talk of assimilation.
4. Few, if any, arrests will be made.
5. This effort will backfire.

Take a look...
1. Lower turnout:

Turnout has fallen sharply since the first nationwide rallies in 2006, when more than 1 million people - at least 400,000 in Chicago alone - flooded streets and brought traffic to a standstill.

And: Turnout for the 2008 May Day demonstrations have shrunk since the first nationwide rallies were held two years ago. Still, organizers held events in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and other large cities. The Los Angeles Times reports that upwards of 20,000 were expected to participate in last Thursday's event in the City of Angels, but estimates that only 8,500 took part in three separate marches that merged at a downtown intersection.

And: Margot Veranes, a volunteer organizer in Tucson, Ariz., -- where 12,000 took to the streets last year but early estimates Thursday put the crowd at about 500 -- blamed the turnout on aggressive enforcement by Border Patrol and police.

2. Flags:




OneNewsNow.com reports from William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), who says organizers learned a lesson from previous events because there were very few Mexican flags seen at the rallies this time around. "The organizations that are supporting these marches handed out American flags, took away Mexican flags, and provided everybody with white shirts to make them seem more friendly and happy and to conceal the true agenda of the illegal alien movement in this country, which is that they're more politically polarized towards Mexico instead of the United States."

3. Assimilation (or, more accurately, a total lack of):

[From Bobby Eberle of GOPUSA] For your humor and amusement, the AP story titled "Thousands rally in May Day effort for immigration reform" is filled with plenty of quotes that show the bias and the slant that the liberal media outlets take on this issue. In the second paragraph, the story talks about marchers across the country who "demanded citizenship opportunities for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and an end to raids and deportations." Did I read that correctly? People come into this country illegally, and then "demand" citizenship and an end to enforcing the laws that are on the books to stop illegal activity?

''We come here to fight for legalization. We're people. We have rights,'' said Eric Molina, an undocumented factory worker who immigrated to Zion, Ill., from Mexico.

''People have been stopped and deported in the last week. This is a community living in fear,'' said Veranes, a researcher for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. ''You never know when you're going to be stopped by Border Patrol and now the police.''

Isn't it the job of the Border Patrol and the police to enforce our laws and protect our borders? Why are people surprised when a person who comes to this country illegally is deported? The outrage! I'm sure jewelry thieves don't take to the streets and start demanding their rights. How dare the authorities take those diamond rings from them?

[From Gheen:] "Many of the signs say 'This is our continent. We're taking it back.' They do not recognize the United States' jurisdiction over one-third of the U.S. and the Southwest. And many others are part of an indigenous movement that [does] not believe that we belong on this continent at all and should return to Europe and Africa."

[From a speaker in Seattle:] This land is NOT America! This land will NEVER be America! This land NEVER was America! This land is (Anawok?). This is (Turtle Island?). This is (Los ??)… It really is the brown people that made this country! The only ones that can really claim this country!

When I say “Where are my brown people at?” You say “Right here!” When I say “Where are all my African people at?” You say “Right here!” When I say “Where are ALL my people at?” You say “Right here!”… Whose land this is? (Our land!) Whose? (OUR land!) That’s right, this ain’t never going to be America!

4. Arrests: I haven't found any articles saying anything about any arrests yet. If you find some, send them in and I'll post a correction. Until that happens, I'll stand by my prediction.

5. Backfire: Despite their best efforts, the Democrats have failed in attempt after attempt to shove through some form of amnesty and loads of benefits for illegal aliens.

American citizens (real, legal ones) simply do not want these things. They want the law of the land to mean something and they want American citizenship to mean something.
