After driving around for almost half an hour, I finally made my own parking spot on the grass. The roads for at least a mile around were choked with cars:
For those of you who don't know, the Liberty Memorial is the national WWI memorial, and is a huge building built into a hillside. The rear of the memorial opens straight out onto a long walkway with some statues and flags; the front is a large circular plaza that faces the front of the memorial building itself. I took these pictures from what is essentially the roof of the memorial, looking out over the plaza.
I was able to zoom in on a couple of the more...interesting...signs:
I have no idea how many people there were, but it was a huge crowd, and very excited. You could just feel it in the air - this was a significant event, and it was heartening to know there are a boatload of us who are sick of this government's waste.
I'll post a picture or two of the tea party in Overland Park later, if I can get my hands on them.
It should be interesting to see how the media reports this day, and what kind of numbers actually showed up. Even better, I'm guessing that for each person in attendance at these events, there are a dozen more who agree with the same ideas and have the same frustrations.
As for myself, it gave me hope that this country is not yet lost, and that there are a LOT of people still willing to fight for the dream that is America.
