The Washington Post had a very interesting editorial in it today by Fred Hiatt. Hillary Clinton was on the campaign trail in Iowa to give a speech, and in the speech she said that she "would keep U.S. troops in Iraq for the foreseeable future because 'we cannot lose sight of our very real strategic national interests in this region.'"
Funny, I thought she and the other Democrat leaders wanted to get us out of Iraq immediately. I wonder why this major change in policy slipped by almost everyone...
Of course, her campaign's press release conveniently left out that crucial little tidbit: "Today in Iowa, Hillary Clinton announced her plan to end the war in Iraq and urged President Bush to act immediately."
Hm, what's with the double-speak? Well, it's typical of the Clintons. Hiatt points out that Clinton's speech included 10 pages of demands for troop withdrawal but only a single paragraph stating her actual plans for keeping troops there. Naturally, the MSM is going to give her a pass on that solitary paragraph and keep up the drumbeat about how the war is lost and how we need to get out right now. But, it should signal to you that even the Democrats know how critical it is for the American mission in Iraq to succeed, even though they're willing to risk a complete disaster down the road in exchange for the acquisition of power right now.
It's a dangerous compromise, and people would do well to remember the games Clinton is willing to play with American lives just to get back into the White House.
There's my two cents.
