Rep. John Culberson, TX claims the "stimulus" bill must be urgently voted on today -- because Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leaving at 6:00 PM for an 8 day trip to Europe!
Culberson made the charge on Houston's KSEV radio.
Pelosi is hoping to lead a delegation to Europe; there's a meeting with the Pope and an award from an Italian legislative group.
Calls to Pelosi's spokesman went unreturned.
In the rushing, Democrats have now broken their promise to have the public see the $790 billion bill for 48 hours before any vote.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) predicted that none of his Senate colleagues would 'have the chance' to read the entire final version of the 1,071-page bill before it comes up for a final vote.
Developing...
Furthermore, the Investor's Business Daily has called this bill an 'egregious waste. Excerpts:
They go on to once again show that this is a massive amount of pork, the bulk of the money gets spent years down the road, massive welfare entitlements will fundamentally alter the social fabric of this nation, and states that have mismanaged their funds will get bailed out at the expense of states that have done things right.Harvard economist Robert Barro calls the legislation "probably the worst bill that has been put forward since the 1930s."
"I mean it's wasting a tremendous amount of money," he said in an interview with the Atlantic. "I don't think it will expand the economy. . . . I think it's garbage."
Rep. Tom Cole, Republican from Oklahoma, was a bit more refined but no less biting in his commentary. Borrowing from Winston Churchill, he wryly observed from the House floor Thursday morning that "Never have so few spent so much so quickly to do so little."
And, keep in mind, they will be voting on a bill today that none of them -- not a SINGLE ONE -- have actually read in its entirety because the Democrats didn't release it until 11pm last night. On top of that, they've formatted the text in such a way that it cannot be keyword searched. The only conclusion for this whole charade is that they don't want anyone to know what's in this thing! Now, who thinks that's a good idea?
More festive details:
- Nationalized health care will be established, and the elderly will be expected to suffer for the common good.
- This bill will create two boards with sweeping and unprecedented power over federal spending...without a single Republican.
- This bill will force states to accept federal 'stimulus' funding and thus federal control...even if the Governor doesn't want it.
So, realistically, what are the chances of stopping this thing? Even if the House Republicans stand unanimously against it, it'll pass (just like in the first vote). So, it comes down to the Senate. The first vote saw 61 votes in favor of the bill, but Kennedy will not be able to vote this time around due to health problems, so that leaves 60. If just one Senator switches from 'yes' to 'no', the bill will fail. In reality, it comes down to the three Republicans who supported this monster the first time: Snowe, Collins, and Specter. If even one of them switches, it's over. Specter's numbers in his home state of Pennsylvania have cratered with his traitorous vote, so he's under a tremendous amount of pressure. He's the one to focus on if you're up for some phone calls.
Depending on what happens today, this could be the last day of America existing as the bright light of freedom and prosperity in the world.
There's my two cents.
