As you can see, we have two very different philosophies at play here. Obama is committed to closing Gitmo, but can't quite figure out how to make it happen. No one else in the world wants the 'detainees' (i.e. terrorists, caught on the battlefield trying to kill American soldiers) who are kept there, so it's up to us. Problem is, if he closes Gitmo, he'll have to bring them onto U.S. soil and submit them to a judicial process that he knows is going to end up in the release of many of them. It's already happened, and it'll happen again. Of course, if he closes Gitmo and one of those released terrorists perpetrates another attack on U.S. soil, it's completely his responsibility. Suddenly, the political calculus has changed, and it's not in his favor now.
As Michelle Malkin says, 'nothing clarifies the mind like a jihadi boomerang.'
So, it looks like Obama is going to issue the order to close Gitmo very quickly after his inauguration, and then fiddlefart around for as long as it takes to come up with an alternate plan before actually carrying out the order. Although I find this to be very good news, his Leftist base isn't going to like it.
This is an example of the hypocrisy that is so typical in liberals - they'll say anything to win the election, knowing full well that they can change the story once they're in office. It is yet another illustration that liberals simply cannot be trusted when they make a promise or commitment. What's shameful is that this liberal tendency also means they have no problem slashing and burning honorable people and institutions like the U.S. military if it is politically convenient.
Real leadership, there.
There's my two cents.
