Friday Quick Hits

Quick Hit #1: Dems May 'Out-Stupid' Reps. Hugh Hewitt posts on an article from The Hill about how there is substantial anger from the far left on the Congress' concession to Bush's recent wiretapping proposal. The ACLU and other liberal activists, spurred on by the lefty "netroots", are gearing up for another fight in September. Hewitt's summary: "The '08 Democrats may just manage to out-stupid the '06 Republicans. Championing terrorists' rights is a guarantee of doing just that." If there's a better way to put it, I don't know what it would be!

Quick Hit #2: Reps Smell Blood in the Water. The UK Telegraph ran a story showing some new hope for Republicans in 2008. With Clinton and Obama bickering like children, both have made serious campaign mistakes. The GOP candidates, however, appear to be holding ranks fairly well, saving the bulk of their criticisms for their potential Democrat opponents. Great...now, if we could just get a little more conservatism, we could win big!

Quick Hit #3: Walking is More Damaging to the Environment Than Driving. Yes, you read that right! Although the conventional 'wisdom' is that driving is the most ferocious violator of our fragile environment, a story in the UK Times Online is now saying that it is more environmentally damaging to walk to the store than to drive there. Apparently, the cost of food production around the world has become so energy-intensive that more carbon is emitted by a person walking than a car being driven the same distance. I think that the only way global warming advocates will be happy is to get rid of all life on the planet. Oh, and get rid of that pesky sun, too. It warms up the Earth too much.

Quick Hit #4: More Taxes, Bigger Government. Scott Harnett writes on Townhall.com that the SCHIP program that Congress just passed will be disastrous for the American economy. He puts it this way: "The U.S. House of Representatives last week approved a $160 billion entitlement explosion, a $53 billion tax hike, relaxed rules for illegal immigrant access to federal benefits, and a package of Medicare cuts. With this they are saddling our children with extraordinary debt, and are doing so without my vote." He maintains that if it gets signed into law, as many as 2/3 of the American public could qualify for health care under this program, and some would be forced into it. Read the whole column. The only hope is that Bush will veto it, and that the House Republicans will stand firm to prevent the veto override (the Senate passed it with a veto-proof majority, but the House did not). Watch closely, this will be a biggie.

Quick Hit #5: The New Tactic for Iraq. Now that the military success in Iraq is undeniable, the Democrats -- who have insidiously positioned themselves to benefit ONLY from defeat -- are having to re-write their playbook. What's their new tactic? To downplay the military (and potentially assassinate the character of Gen. Petraeus) and emphasize the apparent lack of political progress. "The military victories are just episodic," said Rep. Jane Harman, a hawkish California Democrat and chairman of the Homeland Security intelligence subcommittee. Democrats, including the party's conservative "Blue Dogs," say it will take "monumental" improvement in Iraq — not the current blips of success — to sway them from pushing for a U.S. troop withdrawal after a September progress report. What happens when losers with losing attitudes lose? They change the rules retroactively, then say they won. Just watch...

Have a great weekend!

There's my two cents.
