You Just Got Your Taxes Raised Again

Last night the Senate passed (68-31) the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) bill, raising your taxes to pay for a huge new entitlement that isn't necessary. Especially aggravating is the fact that there was another bill that would have accomplished far more without raising any taxes at all. The vote record is here. Of the four Senators from Missouri and Kansas, only Brownback voted against it.

Congratulations! This is what you get when the Democrats run things and when the Republicans are spineless.

It looks like Bush is going to veto it, but with 68 votes the veto could be overridden. This won't be the last tax increase we see in the next 18 months, especially if the Republicans remain AWOL.

There's my two cents.

***UPDATE: Just to clarify, this bill will provide coverage for children of families earning 400% of the poverty rate (that means they're earning over $80,000/year), the definition of "children" used here is people under the age of 25, and the citizenship requirement was also removed, so it will also cover illegal aliens.
