North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.
The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), would be launched from North Korea's Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan's top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.
The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said.
The report is quick to say that the missile doesn't have the range to actually hit Hawaii (though given North Korea's track record, there's no guarantee it would hit Hawaii even if it did have the range).
Still, this speaks volumes on the kind of reaction North Korea thinks it's going to get from Obama: absolutely none at all. Why might they think that? Probably because the last time they fired a missile (in violation of U.N. sanctions), Obama simply shook a mean-looking finger in their direction. The international community couldn't even get a new set of U.N. sanctions issued for the violation. Then, shortly after that, North Korea detonated a nuclear weapon in an underground test facility. This was also in violation of U.N. treaties and treaties with the U.S. Again, there was no meaningful reaction.
So, it's hardly shocking that North Korea would dare to lob a missile straight at us, is it? It's simply the latest example of a rogue dictator flipping the bird to America and Barack Obama precisely because they know they'll get away with it.
Unfortunately, one of these times, a NorKor missile may actually hit its target, which is likely to be an American target (they are expected to have this capability in less than 5 years). What then, Mr. President? Will you finally man up and protect America with aggressive force, or will you break out the groveling apologies and wet noodles again?
I'm not looking forward to finding out.
There's my two cents.
