Michelle Malkin posts a series of links regarding the debate on illegal immigration...from 1790!
It's worth taking a few minutes to browse through this page, but the short version is that even back then there was a debate about the effects of immigration, including crime, burden on social services, election fraud, reciprocity (an American in Mexico is treated differently than a Mexican in America), assimilation, and more.
While the world was very different, and the details of the problems were very different than we face now, the fact remains that these have always been important issues. And, the idea of securing our borders and not caving to illegal immigration has nothing to do with racism against Mexicans, since Mexico didn't even exist back then.
Interesting stuff. Go check it out.
There's my two cents.
