What Caused The Fires?

Two interesting bits of speculation regarding the devastating fires raging across the western U.S. One theory is that it was started by global warming. That little gem came from none other than Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in a press conference, who apparently backed away from the statement on the very next question.

Another theory is that the fires are the latest terrorist attack. I have to admit being extremely skeptical when I first heard this, but after looking at things a bit more, I'm not so sure. USA Today did a story back in July of this year that the FBI learned from one detainee of starting a series of fires in the western U.S. by setting off timed explosives. While there is no proof that this is what actually happened, it is a startling revelation, and seems to be at least plausible. Just take a look at the results:

- almost 1 million evacuated
- over 1,600 homes destroyed
- almost 600 square miles burned by at least 16 simultaneous fires
- dozens killed or injured
- insurance claims could reach $500 million

Sounds like results that would make any terrorist proud, don't you think? Again, this is speculation at this point, but it's something to keep in mind, one of those connect-the-dots kinds of things.

In any case, Reid's first response (which even he didn't believe) is indicative of the Democrat mindset. The question we need to ask ourselves is: do we really want people like this -- who think global warming before terrorism -- controlling our national security?

There's my two cents.
