Election Update

It's been a while since I've done a general election update, so I'll try to pack a bunch of stuff into here.  First, we have a lot to discuss about the rock star Obamessiah.  I've seen another couple of details in follow up to the Saddleback event, and Obama is looking worse and worse with each analysis.  I think it's funny how many liberal commentators say that Obama did great at the event and then change the subject.  Nevertheless, the facts are the facts.  In addition to the abortion and tax questions I've already mentioned, the Obamessiah also whiffed the question about a flip-flop from his past.  Warren asked for an example of where Obama went against party loyalty and his own best interest for the good of America.  Obama gave two examples.

First, he cited the issue of campaign ethics and finance reform.  It was an audacious response, since Obama has decided that his own best interest has rendered inoperative his earlier commitment to public campaign financing.  In addition, his recollection of working with John McCain, and his suggestion that legislators should reject lobbyist-paid meals to eat at McDonalds, seems to have been faulty.

But it was Obama's second example, and the way he explained it, that bears a further look.  As his second example, he cited the signature issue of his campaign:

I
guess the other example from -- I'm not sure this was a more of a partisan issue, but it was something that I felt very deeply -- was when I opposed the initial decision to go into war in Iraq.  That was not a popular view at the time and I was just starting my campaign for the United States Senate and I think there were a lot of people who advised me, you should be cautious.  This is going to be successful.  The president has a very high approval rating and you could end up losing the election as a consequence of this.

Obama's oft-cited speech against the war was delivered on October 26, 2002, three months before he declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in the 2004 election.  It was a time when more people were warning of Saddam Hussein's possible use of chemical warfare against U.S. troops than were suggesting the war would be easily won and might affect a Senate election two years later.

That's not exactly going against his party and own best interest for the good of America.  And, it's not hard to take this stand since he didn't actually have a say in the decision!  But hey, the Obamessiah is all about change, right?  He just changes his mind whenever it's convenient for him.  It's too bad his thousands of press secretaries (i.e. the MSM) rarely question him on the changes.  Obama is truly audacious, if nothing else but for his seeming belief that he is now the inevitable candidate.  He should ask Hillary how that works out before getting too comfy in the role.  I suppose that's to be expected when you're introduced by the Speaker of the House as a gift from God, but it still tends to rub people the wrong way.

For an in-depth look at the anatomy of flip-flopping, by the way go here.  It's intriguing, and, though subjective, it makes some sense.

Not all is happy in Obamessiah-land, though.  There is still a rising backlash against him, and there might also be a bit of an angry white guy revolt in the works that could spoil his election hopes.  One reason for the backlash is that some of his devoted followers are discovering that he might be just words.  Welcome to the real world - the rest of us have known that's all he is for quite some time now.  Better late than never, though!

Still, how empty are his promises on foreign policy?  To listen to the Obamessiah, he will solve all crises in the world simply by thinking about them.  While that may sound nice, and while his devoted followers may buy that, the rest of us would like a little salt on the potato chip.  He's often said that he'll talk to Putin as one of his models, Kennedy, talked to Khrushchev.  That sounds nice, but he seems to be missing history - Khrushchev chewed up Kennedy and spit him out.  In fact, it was the weakness and immaturity that Khrushchev perceived in Kennedy that was one of the reasons the Soviet Union raised the Berlin wall and instigated the Cuban Missile Crisis.  What a great path to follow!  Obama is simply unready to deal with the likes of Putin, and this self-ascribed model of talking as a solution is one of the reasons.  Obama's pledge to disarm the United States is another.  I'm guessing that Putin would love to 'talk' with Obama like Khrushchev 'talked' with Kennedy - he can practically taste the Russian expansion now!

Speaking of foreigners, who's looking into the Obamessiah's foreign campaign donations?  It seems he received around $33,000 from some brothers in a Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza.  Turns out they are jihadists.  Sure, the money was returned (eventually, after the whistle was blown), but the campaign...mistakenly...didn't report the money to the FEC.  Also, how about these other questionable donors:

A donor named  Hbkjb, jkbkj

City: Jkbjnj Works for:  Kuman Bank (doesn't exist)

Occupation:  Balanon Jalalan Amount:  $1,077.23

or the donor Doodad, The # of transactions = 1,044

The $ contributed = $10,780.00

This Doodad character works for FDGFDGF and occupation is DFGFDG

It seems there are also many donations with odd cents involved, indicating overseas donations from non-Americans (who would contribute in even dollars).  There are also no systems in place to prevent donations from being made on a credit card.  These things are not just improper, they're illegal.  Where's the MSM on this?  Oh, that's right, they're ignoring it because they're on his side.

So what about some real issues?  Let's look at taxes.  For the Obamessiah, taxes aren't so much about revenue or running the government as they are about redistributing wealth 'fairly'.  I mentioned this earlier; if you don't believe me, or think I have much credibility, you should know the same idea is being voiced in the Wall Street Journal.

How about education?  I've mentioned this before, too.  The short version is that Obama wants to put more power in the hands of Washington, D.C. to brainwash our children according to the NEA's agenda and avoid using vouchers that would allow kids in failing schools to get out of those failing schools and into schools where they have a much better chance of succeeding.  McCain, on the other hand, has pledged to increase scholarships for poor families, implement vouchers, provide funding for online classes and virtual schools, and incent teachers for successful teaching.  Another big contrast between the two candidates!

How about health care and illegal immigration?  The Obamessiah would give free universal health care to illegal aliens.  Sadly, I'm not sure McCain would be much different.

Former Clinton adviser Dick Morris believes Hillary Clinton is not done:

How will the Clintons undermine Obama? Not by any overt statement. In public, they will appear to be his biggest fans. Hillary does not dare incurr the wrath of Democratic voters by abandoning her party's nominee in the general election. But the Clintons will do what they do best: They will hog the spotlight. By speaking on Tuesday and Wednesday, this former first couple will spread themselves over the convention, usurping media, taking face time, and making the convention appear, for its first three days, as a Hillary Clinton gathering.

By hogging the publicity at the Democratic Convention and by keeping the spotlight away from Obama, the Clintons are going to do all they can to stop the Democrat from getting a bounce from his Convention appearance. How will they hurt Obama down the road? Bill will make off-handed comments, seemingly mistakes. A lose cannon, he will appear to be undisciplined as he follows a game plan to undermine the candidate. Hillary will do her best to avoid campaigning for Obama and will undercut him in any way she can without getting caught.

The convention is coming up in just a few days, so it will be very interesting to see what happens.  Just some food for thought.

Something that happened at a recent campaign stop, the Obamessiah once again revealed his true colors.  When asked by a seven year old girl why he wanted to be President, here was his answer:

"America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don't want that future for my children."

Say what??  You can watch the video here.  The point is that he couldn't even manage a statement about making America better.  The best he could come up with was that America has gone downhill.  This is another example of how the Obamessiah's patriotism is suspect.

And yet, despite all these things, here's another example of how the election coverage has been skewed in favor of Obama:

Democrat Barack Obama has had about a 3 to 1 advantage over Republican John McCain in Post Page 1 stories since Obama became his party's presumptive nominee June 4. Obama has generated a lot of news by being the first African American nominee, and he is less well known than McCain -- and therefore there's more to report on. But the disparity is so wide that it doesn't look good.

Some details:

In overall political stories from June 4 to Friday, Obama dominated by 142 to 96. Obama has been featured in 35 stories on Page 1; McCain has been featured in 13, with three Page 1 references with photos to stories on inside pages.

This dovetails with Obama's dominance in photos, which I pointed out two weeks ago. At that time, it was 122 for Obama and 78 for McCain.

This is not just a Post phenomenon. The Project for Excellence in Journalism has been monitoring campaign coverage at an assortment of large and medium-circulation newspapers, broadcast evening and morning news shows, five news Web sites, three major cable news networks, and public radio and other radio outlets. Its latest report, for the week of Aug. 4-10, shows that for the eighth time in nine weeks, Obama received significantly more coverage than McCain.

Kudos to the Washington Post for actually being willing to report this.  Keep in mind, the MSM is NOT objective, and it RARELY reports facts anymore; a majority of the narrative and mission of the MSM has now become Left-driven Democrat propaganda.

Finally, we come to one of the most critical decisions these candidates will have to make: their Vice Presidential selections.  Tradition has it that the Veeps would be selected before the convention, and it appears that will happen again this year.  Obama reportedly knows who he's going to pick, but isn't releasing names yet.  As is typical of the Obamessiah movement, he's planning a flashy rollout - sending text messages and e-mails to his support base rather than holding an official press conference.  McCain has stated that he'll announce his selection on the 29th.

One note on this - I think it's probably partly a strategic move on Obama's part to announce that he knows his Veep pick immediately after the Saddleback debacle and his disastrously indefensible abortion record.  He needs to get that event off of people's minds, and this is the best way to do it.

So, there's your election update!  Hopefully it was illuminating.

There's my two cents.
