Quotes For The Times

Here are a number of quotes that should make us stop and think about our current presidential race.
“While the media may treat the elections as being about Democrats and Republicans...elections were not set up by the Constitution of the United States in order to enable party politicians to get jobs. Nor were elections set up in order to enable voters to vent their emotions or indulge their fantasies. Voting is a right but it is also... a duty not just to show up on election day, but a duty to give serious thought to the alternatives on the table and what those alternatives mean for the future of the nation.”
-- Thomas Sowell --

This is some good general advice. I have mentioned this before - I used to believe that everyone should vote, but over the past year or so I've changed my mind. Now, I firmly believe that only the informed should cast their vote. I am not alone.
"When words lose their meaning, people will lose their liberty."
-- Confucius --

This is something I've often mentioned, too - liberals' tendency to redefine words to mean something they don't actually mean. Apparently, there were liberals in Confucius' day, too.
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light."
-- Plato --
(hat tip Heavy-Handed Politics)
This is so true of just about all our political leaders nowadays. Way too many members of both of our parties have way too many secrets to hide. When we have a large handful of members of Congress who are somehow actively involved in scandals of one kind or another, there is a major, major problem with our society. They have failed us, and we are failing ourselves by continuing to vote to keep them in office.
"Be not too hasty to trust or admire the teachers of morality; they discourse like angels, but they live like men."
-- Dr. Samuel Johnson --
Does this remind anyone else of Barack Obama, with his soaring speeches about saving the sick and healing the very planet we live on? And, keep in mind, he has not exactly discouraged the use of terms like 'savior' or 'messiah'. While it may be understandable that he doesn't want to alienate his overzealous followers, it is a bit of a surprise that he hasn't come out in harsh criticism of those who -- like me -- use those terms to poke a little fun at him. The logical conclusion is that he doesn't particularly mind the title.

"It is terrible to speak well and be wrong."
-- Sophocles --

Does this sum up Barack Obama, or what?
"As the old proverb says 'Like readily consorts with like.'"
-- Cicero --
This is particularly interesting to contemplate when you think about Barack Obama's long-time associations of unrepentant terrorists, avowed racists, dedicated anti-Americans, crooked thugs, and people with terrorist ties. True, it's not a proof, but if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck, and if water runs off its back like a duck...it's a pretty good bet that it's a duck.

Just some things to think about.

There's my two cents.
