Larry Craig, amidst a storm of negative publicity, resigned his Senate seat over the weekend, just as I predicted.
My third and final prediction is also true: Dianne Feinstein, William Jefferson, and Barney Franke will remain in Congress despite various indictments and ethical abuses. Also, Jim McGreevey and Bill Clinton -- despite repeated brushes with lies, scandals, and various illegalities -- will remain in good standing with lefties.
Once you understand the philosophies behind the right and the left, it's not hard to see a lot of these things coming. The one thing I want to point out with the Larry Craig mess, though, is the double standard.
Peter Wehner writes a great piece at NRO on the Left/Right political double standard - go read it. The short version is that the reason Righties who are caught in scandal get demonized and ousted is that their base demands accountability and integrity, and hypocrisy is an easy target for political enemies. Lefties who are caught in scandal scarcely warrant a mention in the MSM because their base doesn't seem to care, and if they don't care, their political enemies can get no traction.
As Tom DeLay said of scandal-plagued politicians on Hardball with Chris Matthews last week: "Republicans address 'em, Democrats re-elect 'em."
I don't mean to insult anyone who considers themselves on the left side of the political spectrum, but can you give me any other rational explanation? If you can, I'd love to hear it. I'm open to having my mind changed, but until that happens, I'll stick with the theory outlined here.
There's my two cents.
