Citizenship Issues

An interesting citizenship issue is being considered in Canada: the citizenship of anyone convicted of terrorist activites may be revoked. Sounds like a great idea to me! Of course, it would be a moot point unless and until we actually crack down on illegal immigration.

Also, Right Truth blogs about eight al Qaeda members that were arrested with explosives in Denmark. The scenario was fairly standard -- explosives, Muslims from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Turkey -- but one detail jumped out at me: six of them held Danish citizenship.

Does this ring a bell at all? I blogged about this last month (here and here). Congress has passed bills that expand the visa waiver program, which relaxes background checks on people entering the U.S. from 'friendly' nations. Last I heard, Denmark wasn't exactly an enemy state, was it?

This is exactly the problem with this program. These al Qaeda members had Danish citizenship, and could likely have gotten into the U.S. much more easily than from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Turkey. Who knows how many terrorists have already entered by gaining citizenship from a nation 'friendly' to the U.S.?

This program needs to be shut down.

There's my two cents.
