Illegal Driver's Licenses: Prepare For More Voter Fraud

The Wall Street Journal editorializes on the potential effects of New York's potential plan (implemented by Gov. Eliot Spitzer and supported by Sen. Hillary Clintong*) to give illegal aliens a driver's license. One of the major effects would be massive voter fraud. Here's the progression:

- in 1993, Bill Clinton signed
the National Voter Registration Act, commonly known as "Motor Voter" Act, allowing anyone getting a driver's license to simply check a box on a form to register to vote
- no one verifies the citizenship status of anyone who registers this way
- last year, 245,000 people registered this way in New York alone

This is a significant problem, and will only become more so. Look at what's already happened:
[A] 1997 Congressional investigation found that "4,023 illegal voters possibly cast ballots in [a] disputed House election" in California. After 9/11, the Justice Department found that eight of the 19 hijackers were registered to vote.
So, this is a measure that would allow not only illegal aliens to vote, but also terrorists. Call me crazy, but I don't believe either of these groups should get the right to help decide our nation's leaders!

The issue of photo IDs being required for voting is likely to be pretty hot for the 2008 election, as several states (like New York) are endorsing policies that come very close to violating federal law. The Supreme Court will likely be the final arbiter of this issue.

The Editorial goes on:
Despite her muddled comments this week, there's no doubt where Mrs. Clinton stands on ballot integrity. She opposes photo ID laws, even though they enjoy over 80% support in the polls. She has also introduced a bill to force every state to offer no-excuse absentee voting as well as Election Day registration--easy avenues for election chicanery. The bill requires that every state restore voting rights to all criminals who have completed their prison terms, parole or probation.
So, once again, we come to the question of why some people want to make it easier for illegal aliens, terrorists, and criminals to vote. It all comes down to stacking the ballot box.

In poll after poll, somewhere between 46% and 49% of Americans would not vote for her, regardless of her opponent (even crazy Ron Paul). She's desperate for any vote she can get.

There is no good reason NOT to require photo ID in order to vote, unless policies like Spitzer's in New York get implemented - then a photo ID will not matter one bit. But, this is an issue that is so plain and simple that it's hard to believe anyone would be against it. Why would we not protect one of our most precious rights -- that of choosing our own leaders -- with all reasonable means? A photo ID is not hard to obtain, it doesn't cost much, and it shouldn't cause a problem for anyone...except for felons, illegal aliens, and terrorists, who shouldn't be voting anyway.

There's my two cents.
