Earmarks have become a plague on the American citizen, and most of us don't even know it. Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle waste tens of millions of dollars (if not more) every year on pet projects for their constituents. Money gets thrown at things like theaters, museums, bridges, research, and anything else you can think of. These politicians have found barely-legal ways to skirt the 'ethical' issues involved, but anyone with more than 1/5 of a working brain can figure out that these earmarks go straight back to the biggest campaign contributors.
When is the American public going to realize that Congress is wasting our money?? Where would the federal deficit be if it weren't for earmarks? How much lower would our taxes be if it weren't for earmarks? How much more money could be dedicated to helping the poor and needy if it weren't for the mind-boggling amount of money wasted on earmarked pet projects?
It's time to start demanding some fiscal accountability from our elected leaders.
There's my two cents.
