A Texas Republican congressman and former judge, Ted Poe, blasts Bush's position:
"It's very ironic that the president has taken the side of a brutal killer in this case, a person that the jury overwhelmingly said ought to be executed -- and it's unfortunate. So I think the president, in all due respect, is totally out of line trying to interfere with the judicial system in the state of Texas, and I hope the Supreme Court agrees with that," says Poe.The Supreme Court is expected to take up the case today. Twenty-eight states have signed on in support of Texas, maintaining this is a separation of powers issue according to the Constitution, and that the federal government cannot force the states to comply.
I am shocked that Bush would take up the defense -- in a death penalty case in Texas, of all things! -- of a Mexican convicted of killing two American children! Not only is that disturbing on the face of it, but it is further evidence that Bush is leaning toward globalization, putting greater emphasis on international law than on American law. I'm glad that the Supreme Court is now pretty much even in regard to originalist/activist judges, because there is a better than average chance that they'll come out on the side of American law, as they should.
Once we give up American sovereignty to foreign courts, no American citizen will be safe anywhere in the world. The President should be publicly called to accountability for this severely poor judgment!
There's my two cents.
