House Appropriations Committee chairman David Obey (Dem, WI) has vowed he will not bring up a $190 billion supplemental funding request from President Bush until the president includes a change in Iraq policy. In response, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Rep, KY) is urging his Democratic colleagues not to close this session without funding U.S. troops in Iraq:
"It's been a debate about who do you trust to decide when these troops come home, about who has the authority and judgment to make decisions about how to protect our national security interests in the Persian Gulf," stated McConnell. "Republicans think it should be the Commander-in-Chief in consultation with his commanders on the ground." He added that he and his fellow Republicans do not believe American foreign policy should be drafted by liberal, anti-war groups like MoveOn.org and Code Pink.Once again: who actually supports the troops?
The Republicans believe the Commander-in-Chief and the commanders in the battle zone should decide when troops come home. The Democrats are refusing to even consider funding our troops in the battle zone until they have legislated a surrender.
Has the Democrat party actually become anti-American? I hope they're just playing politics right now -- as despicable as that would be -- and that they'll back off as they have every other time when Bush has called their bluff. If they actually follow through with this, we'll know beyond the shadow of a doubt that they have, in fact, become the anti-American party.
There's my two cents.
